WETA Rolls Out A Warthog

What you have here, kids, is a full-scale, fully functional Warthog built by the people at WETA Workshops. You may have heard all the hullaballoo about the Halo movie. Hype for the project snow-balled pretty quickly when it was announced that Peter “Lord of the Rings” Jackson would be the film’s executive producer and that WETA Workshops was in line to handle the special effects. Unfortunately, the project stalled when Jackson chose a relatively unknown director by the name of Neill Blomkamp to helm the film. Since then, things have pretty much floundered, although judging from Blomkamp’s previous work in his short film Alive in Joburg, I honestly felt confident that he would handle the undertaking rather well. Still, in spite of the trouble in finding a film studio willing to gamble on a film adaptation of one of gaming’s biggest franchises by an unseasoned director, Blomkamp and WETA have carried on, working on a series of short films set in the Halo universe to lead up to the release of Halo 3. It’s safe to say that these shorts are aimed at establishing Blomkamp’s strengths as a director while offering a glimpse into Jackson et al’s vision for the movie; to prove to any circling studio execs that the project is worth backing. I hope they bite.

PS~I didn’t know it until now, but Blomkamp is also the guy behind the Tetra Vaal short that amazed me a few years back. I found this out after Ryan mentioned Blomkamp’s TempBot, in which I noticed the striking resemblance between the TempBot and the Tetra Vaal. All I have to say is that judging from his short-films, I think Blomkamp is really a brilliant pick for the Halo picture. I really hope it gets off the ground.

    That’s a damn cool Warthog. I wonder if it’s street-legal.
