Writing the Guide: Thoughts On My First Week as a Strategy Guide Author
Despite my best efforts to find a photo that would have anything to do with this post, I failed miserably. So, here, watch the struggles of the modern ninja as I regale you with stories of my initial experiences as a freelance author. The strategy guide I’m working on for Prima is, as far as I can tell, going pretty well. I wouldn’t say that’s a feeling I’ve had throughout the week that I’ve been working on it. My feelings on my progress with the project have fluctuated between a cautious optimism and a quiet, yet crippling panic. This, I’m told, is a relatively normal emotional pendulum, particularly for a first-time author. I’m sure Fernando has had enough of working the First Time Strategy Guide Author Crisis Hotline, of which I am the sole caller, but he has really been a great help in helping me hit the ground running. So, a big thanks goes out to him.
Now, you might be wondering what it’s like to write a guide. Okay. Maybe not. But I’m going to tell you anyway. It’s awesome. It’s terrifying. It’s exhausting. It’s fun and it’s a whole lot of other adjectives as well. In short, I love it, which is funny simply because part of me doesn’t think I should love it as much as I do. It’s tedious at times, and there’s a lot of meticulous attention to detail that goes into it. As an English Major with a knack for disorganization, I am rather amazed that I’ve taken to this with the fervor that I have. There’s so much structure and organization that goes into writing a guide and it is all so different than anything else I’ve ever done for a living. And, yet, I’m really taking to it.
I submitted my outline last week and that was well received, so I jumped into writing the guide. In my mind, that process is going really well thus far. But, I only just submitted my sample chapter today, so we’ll see how on or off the mark I am in my self-assessment. In the meantime, I’ve still got plenty more to do, so I will just keep whittling away at the mountain of work that is the writing of a strategy guide. I’ll post more in the future, but for now, wish me luck!
