My GRAW Update Wishlist

Even at release, Ubi Soft and the Red Storm team was promising downloadable content for Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GRAW). Thus far they’ve been clandestine on the subject. I’ve pored over forums and news postings, but have come away completely empty-handed. What follows is simply my little wishlist of what I’d love to see happen in any future updates that happen to occur.

First, and I know this one’s an absolute certainty, I wish to see the multiplayer co-op story expanded. I thought the integration of an online campaign was a great addition to the Ghost Recon series, as well as a strong showing of Red Storm’s utter committment to those players who have truly enabled their continued success: the online community. I don’t really have any specific requests in this arena, beyond the inclusion of further Xbox Live Achievement points to help up my Gamerscore.

More Toys

Secondly, I’d love to see the arsenal grow and change. For changes, how about bringing back the claymores? Man, those added a whole new element to the game. In terms of growth, I’d love to see the number of compact rifles increased. As it is, the MP5 is the sole representative of the submachine gun category, and unfortunately its lack of sights makes it a poor weapon choice on GRAW’s many larger maps. It’s a great choice for maps like Boneyard, where combat is of the close-quarters variety, but on a map like Temple, you’ll just get mauled by some unseen assailant.

That said, I’d love to see a sighted version of the MP5 (maybe with a 2x zoom and sans supressor) added to the catalogue. I’d also really like to see this category expanded upon a bit. In particular I want to use the SAS version of the HK G3.Hell, I’d love to have the regular G3A3 for that matter.

G3 SAS

“M3RCUTIO called. He said he wants his three-round burst back.”

On the subject of the weapons, I’m not sure what happened between Ghost Recon 2 and GRAW, but suddenly none of the assault rifles offer a three-round burst, save the A2, and that’s only at the expense of a full-auto setting. This move smacks of lame. I’ve always been a big proponent of the three-round burst. It’s always struck me as being more accurate and effective than full-auto, which seems to rely on the spray-and-pray methodology of marksmanship. But this time around the three-round burst is pretty much M.I.A. and I’m disappointed. So, yeah, I’d love to see more weapons with this rate of fire (with a full-auto option also!) put into the update.

Oldies but goodies

Finally, on the subject of maps, I’d love to see some of the original maps brought back to life in next-gen fashion. Among the maps I’d love to see brought back are P.O.W. Camp, Day and Night Castle, and the Farm. But I’ve thought about it quite a bit, and if I could only have them reinvent one map from the Ghost Recons of yore, it’d have to be the Swamp map from the original. With its moody ambiance of thick fog, steady rain, and dense foliage, I can picture an incredibly detailed re-imagining of it. I doubt I’ll ever see that come to pass, but I bet I’ll get to see the spawn-camper’s paradise that was the Embassy map brought in to play, which is great in a wholly sarcastic sense.
