Fanboy May Cry

If you hadn’t heard, Capcom’s highly acclaimed Devil May Cry series is going multi-platform. What does that mean? It means the next installment of the once Sony-exclusive action franchise will make its way to both the PC and the Xbox 360. This move by Capcom only makes sense from a financial standpoint, particularly given the 360’s existing fanbase and the success that Capcom has enjoyed with their previous releases on Microsoft’s next-gen console. The announcement comes as a significant loss for Sony, but it’s a big win for gamers in general. Personally, I hope more third-party developers follow suit.

But today I ran across this little piece of inanity. Apparently, a number of Sony fans are up in arms over Capcom’s decision to share Devil May Cry 4 with us mere mortals. They’ve joined forces and are now petitioning the company to keep the franchise tethered to Sony. Their petition reads as follows:

We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold our option of buying your product.

I’m a little perplexed by all of this. I’m not sure how they can “feel very left out”. I mean, they’re still getting the game, right? It’s not like Capcom decided to scrap any and all plans to bring the franchise to the PS3. Ironically enough, their intentions to boycott Capcom’s games will, in effect, leave them “very left out”. I’m not sure how this maneuver can be construed as Capcom turning its back on Sony loyalists.

In fact, the language in this petition is so incredibly contradictory and abysmally sad that the arguments really just come off as the self-defeating moanings of a child who doesn’t want to share his ball with the other kids. I don’t know what’s more depressing: the fact that this petition exists, or the fact that, as of writing this, nearly 70,000 sycophants have signed off on it. I’m wrestling with being amused and angry by the whole thing. Maybe I should write a petition…

EDIT: Since writing this, it looks like they’ve weeded out quite a few ringers. Almost 60,000 of them, to be exact.

    Dear Capcom:

I don’t like the way you’re making your games more accessible to a broader audience. Because of this intelligent business decision that makes sense from every logical perspective, you will not see my money spent on your products and I will continue to live in a fantasy land made of George Foreman Grills and tears and blue rays.

    Signed,
    the undersigned
