Time To Pretend
Yesterday my pal Eriq stumbled upon this little gem on the ol’ internets. It’s the video for the song Time To Pretend by MGMT. The catchy chorus and driving, distorted drum-line easily hooked me and I was grabbed by the blatant references to psychidellics.
Initially, I enjoyed it all in a very vapid sort of way; but it was so good that I listened to it several times over. Before long a few of the lyrics really grabbed my attention, so I pulled them up to read along. What I found was a very somber and compelling anthem for passing youth. There’s a cynicism about growing old that, despite its youthful naivety, hits upon some very real truths.
I’m feeling rough, I’m feeling raw, I’m in the prime of my life.
Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I’ll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars. This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun.
Yeah, it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.Forget about our mothers and our friends
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretendI’ll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I’ll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I’ll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I’ll miss the boredem and the freedom and the time spent alone. There’s really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce
We’ll find some more models, everyting must run it’s course. We’ll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretendYeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Dude, im so stoked you dug it..so often our musical tastes seem to differ.
Regarding the new MGMT album just released (that includes this song) called “Oracular Spectacular” - I wouldn’t say it’s the most approachable album i’ve ever heard by any means, but that makes it no less interesting, in my opinion.
Generally when an album jumps between thoughts, or musical styles, it makes it feel too disjointed and takes away from the flow, and thus your enjoyment of it - I would say this album sort of comes off in that way, but strangely is also an exception, at least in the sense that each of the different musical ideas are so strong and reflective that their contribution to the whole just seems to make it all work.
At least..that’s what I remember from my listen of it yesterday, lol..
Makes me sad, I hope that B B can still enjoy the comfort of their mother as they grow up and face the challanges of being a young adult in this day and age
With any luck, our kids will turn out to be role models like Jamie Lynn Spears. Oh, wait…
Oh, re: the video:
The music’s not my cup of tea, but the video made me wish that I had a giant owl to ride.
