Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire

We went to see Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire yesterday. Since we all wanted to see it and Brynn isn’t quite at the stage where she’s “patient” enough to sit through a two-and-a-half hour movie, we went in shifts. Laura and her mom took Byron to the 1:30 showing; Marco and I went to the 4:30 showing. Everybody enjoyed it.

Me, personally? I thought it was really good. I haven’t read any of the books, but have enjoyed the films immensely (Despite the social stigmatism that accompanies a grown man’s fondness for what is billed as children’s entertainment. Fortunately, I can usually slake this off on the fact that I have kids.). I’ve enjoyed the growth of the characters and themes. If the movies are any indication, I could see this being a great series of books to read to one’s children, as they can literally grow up with the characters.

I’ve noticed that the movies have grown darker and more grave as they’ve progressed, and Goblet of Fire definitely pushes the envelope at quite a few turns. There were some scenes that were downright freaky. I particularly enjoyed Harry’s duel with the Horntail.

While I was watching the movie I was thinking how wonderful a medium film is, and how much it’s changed since I was a kid. The level of realism that films can deliver when dealing with such fantastical places and events as those encountered by Harry Potter and Frodo are truly astounding. It’s escapism at its best.
