Poor Girl :(

Yesterday was awful. After coming in far earlier than any reasonable human being should be stirring, Laura messaged me, saying that Brynn was in a poor state. Apparently, she had woken up, tossing and turning, screaming for Mommy and Daddy. She just could not be soothed. She kept pointing in her mouth, and when she’d open her mouth, it was a web of thick saliva. She was also drooling incessantly and would not stop crying.

Of course, it had to be a day that I took the car to work. There was really nothing for it, so I headed home. I’ve never seen our girl looking so out of it and just so downright miserable. A call to her pediatrician determined that we should get her in right away, but not before they said to give her some cough syrup, without antihistimines. I asked if some Triaminic that I had would be okay, and they said yes. So, I gave her some, and then Laura, being far more astute than me in the reading of the medicine’s contents, informed me, “This has antihistimines.”

The problem with antihistimines is that it counteracts the other medication that Brynn is on for her epilepsy, and it greatly increases her risks of having a seizure. Needless to say, we went straight into the pediatrician. After a thorough examination he told us that Brynn has a nasty ear infection, and that it’s not uncommon for a child with an ear infection to associate it with throat pain. He somewhat allayed our fears about the antihistimines, explaining that it is preferred that we avoid it, but if it’s the choice between giving her nothing or giving her an antihistimine, that’s okay. We just need to be aware of the increased potential for a seizure.

So, yeah, my day sucked. I’m glad we know what’s going on with our darling girl. Hopefully the antibiotics clear up the infection quickly. And, no, that picture is not from yesterday. The last thing on our mind was documenting her discomfort. That’s just the only picture I had in which Brynn looked miserable. I think she’s actually complaining about last summer’s heat wave in that picture. Thank God it’s my Friday, because I am exhausted. Image
