Frolfin’

I’m finally getting back into disc golf. I used to play pretty frequently when I was out in Minnesota. We used to always go to this course called Kaposia out there.

Kaposia is a great course all around, but we always looked forward to playing what was then the 14th (now, the 15th) hole. The hole straddled a small valley, with the tee on the southern crest of one side of the valley, and the basket on the opposite hill. The distance between tee and basket was only about 250-feet, but even the slightest wind, or imbalance on your throw could send your disc arcing into the tall grass of the valley between the two hills. I once managed to “ching out” in two throws, which is a feat I still pride myself upon; especially since I’ve spent many a half-hour wading through knee-high grass betweent he tee and basket in search of my driver.

I’ve since started getting into frolf again. I played Pier Park in North Portland about two weeks ago with my friend Toby. We got a late start and parked in the wrong place, so we only did the back 9, but what we played was great. There were a lot of longer holes, many of which offered narrow corridors between trees.

Yesterday I went to Orchard Park with Dean. Orchard Park is a small 9-holer. Most of the holes are wide open, providing a great chance for beginners to pick up on the game, as well as a nice opportunity for seasoned players to work on their drives. Best of all, however, is that it’s just two-minutes from my apartment, and only six-minutes from the office, which means I can get out there and throw a quick round in little to no time.

I’m having a lot of fun with it, and hopefully by the time me and my co-workers head out to the Grand Lodge for frolf and beers, I’ll be able to lead the pack. That, and I hope I improve enough to give my friend Matt in Minnesota a run for his money when I head out there this summer.

PS ~ On this subject, I’ve since added a link to http://www.discgolfreview.com/, which is a great resource for frolfers and potential frolfers.

It was definitely enjoyable. We’ll need to do it again. Soon. NOW.
